Last Friday (24), Uber gained authorization to operate with electric scooters in São Paulo, a market in which the company has invested heavily. However, on Tuesday (28), the company announced a new bet: Uber users in Vitória, Espírito Santo, will be able to travel by Tuk-tuk! That's right, those nice carts that look like the result of the cross between a motorcycle and a van. Operations begin on Wednesday (29).
The modality was developed in partnership with the rental company Movida to reinforce the mobility offer in these first months of the year, when there is an increase in demand in the city. Tuk-tuks are the only ones in the country to circulate by application. The rental company brought the vehicles to Brazil and made them available for rent to drivers interested in driving on the platform.
- Uber bets on electric scooters in Brazil
“We decided to bring Tuk's trips to the edge of Vitória at the beginning of the year, when the region gets busier. Getting around by Tuk will be cheaper than traveling by car and will bring a different experience, unprecedented for Brazilians. Our goal is to offer more options on our platform so that people can choose right now whether they want to travel by car or by Tuk-tuk ", says Silvia Penna, Uber's operations manager in Brazil.
To order a trip with the Tuk it is not necessary to download any other application, just use the same Uber account already used to request travel by car and ensure that the application is up to date. For new users, it is necessary to download the Uber app and register on the platform. As with UberX travel, users will be able to choose whether to pay for travel directly through the app or with cash.

For the driver interested in driving on the Uber platform with a Tuk-tuk, just go to a Movida store in Vitória and make the request. It is necessary to have a National Driver's License (CNH) category A or AB. After reviewing the documents, approval comes out in less than 24 hours. It is also worth remembering that Movida created a tasting mechanism to encourage the driver to start driving the Tuk-tuk. The rent for the first three days will be free of charge and if the driver gives up on the rent by the beginning of the fourth day and returns the vehicle to the store, there will be no charge.
“Vehicle rental is one of the transforming agents of urban mobility today, as it allows consumers to have more transport options. For this reason, we believe and seek to develop mobility solutions for the consumer, testing new modes, such as the rental of trikkes and electric bicycles in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. In the case of Vitória's Tuk-tuk, it is still a source of income for those who want to work in the sector. The start of this new operation is the result of a successful partnership with Uber in car rental ”, comments Maria Yamamoto Baldin, director of New Business at Movida.
