Huawei P50 Pocket

Huawei has finally released its compact folding cell phone, the P50 Pocket. After having several visual and technical features revealed through rumors in the previous days, the device has now gained an official price and full spec sheet, with powerful processor, triple set of cameras and high refresh rate screen, among other attractions.

  • Poco M4 Pro Review | Good and cheap 5G cell phone that only works on the screen
  • Xiaomi 11i Hypercharge arrives in January with a battery that charges in 15 minutes

The folding design features two modules on the back cover, one of which houses all the lenses, and the other serves as a small 1-inch circular screen that shows time, date and notifications — the display can still be used by third-party applications with its own service for developing widgets such as a music player, for example.

The construction of the P50 Pocket allows it to have no space between the two parts of the screen when closed. The edges of the display are thin and nearly symmetrical, while the camera hole is centered at the top. The OLED panel is 6.9 inches, with a resolution of 2,790 x 1,188 pixels, a 21:9 aspect ratio and support for a 120 Hz refresh rate, which allows for smoother animations and fluid navigation through the menus.

Inside, processing is the task of a Snapdragon 888, chipset that was part of Qualcomm’s most powerful line for 2021, but already has Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 as its successor — so it’s not the most up-to-date platform out there, but still should deliver a very satisfactory performance. The performance suite is completed with versions ranging between 8 and 12 GB of RAM, and 256 and 512 GB of internal storage for photos, videos, applications and other files in general.

The camera suite, on the other hand, is led by a 40 MP sensor, aided by a 13 MP ultrawide camera and another extra 32 MP sensor that serves to help color processing the captured images — on the front, the selfie camera offers 10.7 MP.

The battery of the P50 Pocket has 4,000 mAh, with support for fast charging up to 40 W via cable connected to the USB-C input. The device is only 7.2 mm thick when open and 15.2 mm when closed, meaning it can be placed in your pocket comfortably, as the name of the cell phone suggests.

As with the P50 Pro, the P50 Pocket uses a customized version of the Snapdragon 888 limited to 4G networks, not having 5G support. At least the device has Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2, with its fingerprint reader for biometric authentication located on the side.

Even though it appears as a competitor to the Galaxy Z Flip 3, the P50 Pocket does not come with Android as we know it, as Huawei is still banned from using Google services, which limits access to many essential apps in the West. With this, the device runs the so-called HarmonyOS, which brings support for some of the most popular applications on the market, but with a greater focus on the Chinese market.

Price and availability

The Huawei P50 Pocket was initially released exclusively in China, but rumors are that the device will be available in Europe soon, along with the P50 Pro. The foldable will come in white and black (only 8 + 256 GB) for the price suggested price of 8,988 yuan (about R$7,979 in direct conversion), but the brand will still offer a Premium version in gold (with 12 + 512 GB), valued at 10,988 yuan (R$9,754).
